How to Get into Nursing School
If you've always had a calling to help others and crave a career that's both meaningful and secure, you've probably thought about nursing. You've decided on the 'what'—being a nurse—but the 'how' is somewhat unclear. That's where this guide can help.
1. Decide Why You Want to Become a Nurse
First off, it's important to know why you want to become a nurse. This is a job that can be tough, but is equally rewarding. Your reason for choosing this path is what will drive you through nursing school and into a fulfilling career.
Maybe it's because you love helping others, or you've seen a family member work as a nurse, or you had a great nurse who took care of you once. Regardless of your reasons, make sure they are clear to you.

2. Consider the Different Types of Nursing Programs
Nursing programs aren't one-size-fits-all. Depending on your career goals and the time you can commit to your education, there are different types of nursing degrees and programs.
For example, an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) each come with their own time commitments and career outcomes. Or maybe becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is more aligned with your goals.

3. Research Nursing School Prerequisites and Admission Requirements
To get into nursing school, you'll need to meet certain requirements. These could be a minimum age, specific courses you've taken, or tests you've passed. Every school has its own admission requirements, so be sure to check with an admissions representative at your chosen nursing school. At Jersey College, our Admissions requirements include, but are not limited to:
· Students must be at least 18 years of age.
· Students must present a high school diploma or equivalent documentation.
· Students must be U.S. Citizens or legal permanent residents.
· Students must complete an application for admissions.
· Students must participate in interviews with administration and/or faculty and obtain a recommendation for admission.
4. Complete the Application Process
When you're sure you meet the requirements, it's time to apply. You may need to:
· fill out an application form
· provide letters of recommendation
· go through interviews
· and take an entrance exam.

How to Prepare for Your Nursing School Admissions Interviews
During the interview, you'll meet with an admissions officer, administration, and/or a faculty member. You will be asked about your grades and academic history, your experience with patient care, and why you want to be a nurse, among other things.
To prepare, try practicing answers to common nursing school interview questions, and be ready to explain why you chose nursing as a career.
5. Set Yourself Up for Success
Succeeding in nursing school is about more than just meeting the admission requirements and passing exams. It's about building the right mindset and adopting habits that will help you thrive in a demanding environment.
· Being organized is key. You'll be juggling a lot of information and tasks, so find a system that helps you manage your schedule and keep track of important dates and tasks.
· Time management is also critical. With class time, study time, and hands-on placements, you'll need to prioritize your tasks wisely. Remember, it's crucial to also carve out time for relaxation and self-care.
· Maintaining a positive and persistent mindset will help you through tough times. Recall why you chose this path and keep your end goal in mind.
