Jersey College Tampa Students Support Dengue Prevention Outreach Through Operation Drain and Cover

Jersey College Tampa nursing students recently partnered with the Florida Department of Health (DOH) to support Operation Drain and Cover, taking their nursing education beyond the classroom and directly into the Hillsborough County community.

Working alongside DOH team members, students visited 954 residences and businesses as part of a dengue outreach effort, providing education about ways community members can help reduce the risk of Dengue Fever. Students shared information about eliminating standing water, which can serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, as well as using EPA-approved insect repellents to help protect against mosquito bites.

The community outreach provided Jersey College students with valuable experience applying their nursing knowledge in a real-world setting. By engaging directly with residents and businesses, students had the opportunity to see how education and prevention can play an important role in protecting community health.

Experiences like Operation Drain and Cover demonstrate that nursing extends far beyond the clinical setting. Nurses serve as educators, advocates, and trusted resources, helping individuals and communities make informed decisions about their health.
