Student Spotlight: Yokasty B. Wins Nursing Scholarship

Jersey College is proud to announce Yokasty Baez, a Practical Nursing graduate and current Professional Nursing student, was awarded a scholarship from the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN). The NAHN is committed to advancing the health in Hispanic communities and to lead, promote and advocate the educational, professional, and leadership opportunities for Hispanic nurses.

Yokasty graduated from the Practical Nursing program at Jersey College in 2015. Her desire to help others and further her education led her to return to enroll in the LPN to RN Bridge program at the Teterboro campus, where she is currently in pursuit of her Registered Nursing license. Baez’s passion for learning started at a young age, as did her ability to balance life and studies. She was raised in a single parent household with five siblings when her family migrated to America and recalls her mother’s hard work to make ends meet for her family. This same work ethic was instilled in Baez as she would work long hours and then attend school after her shift ended.

During treatment for a medical issue, Baez remembered the compassion shown by the nurses who cared for her. This demonstration of compassion made Baez realize she wanted to become a nurse. Once she set her goal there was nothing that could stand in her way. Her commitment to excellence, and passion to fulfill her dream is truly inspirational. During her journey she has faced challenges such as language barriers and supporting a growing family while also focusing on education, but she has persevered.

Ms. Beth Cofini, one of her nursing instructors shares: “Ms. Baez is a stellar student who works hard to balance work, school, and family. I admire her ability to simplify concepts and assist her peers in understanding the art and science of nursing. I have witnessed her commitment to do more than just earn a passing grade. Ms. Baez does not shy away from hard work.”

The nursing programs at Jersey College have been designed to support students in accomplishing their educational and professional goals, and to foster the diversification of the nursing workforce to better serve the multicultural communities surrounding each campus. It is an honor to know that a Jersey College graduate is receiving recognition from the National Association of Hispanic Nurses - New Jersey Chapter. In support of Yokasty’s nomination and acceptance by the NANH, students from both the day and evening PN and RN programs, and educational leadership from Jersey College attended the award ceremony.
