Traits of Great Nurses

Traits of Great Nurses

Nursing is a career that attracts many people and many personalities.  A question among those considering nursing school is “am I cut out for it”?

Believe it or not, there are actually “nursing personality traits” that are useful if one hopes to succeed as a nursing professional.  This isn’t to say that anyone with the drive to succeed in nursing isn’t capable of having a wonderful career as a nurse – of course that’s possible!

We just wanted to call out characteristics that over time, have proven very useful to successful nurses in various healthcare fields.

Compassionate

Nurses offer comfort, knowledge and support when no one else is able to.

Medicine may be a science, but nursing is an art. Nurses are the unsung heroes of hospitals, doctor’s offices and other health care facilities across the world. Nurses tend to the ill, aid doctors and other medical specialists in every procedure imaginable and act as catch-alls for a variety of other medical care tasks

Patience

Though hospitals and other health care facilities can be fast-paced environments, there are plenty of instances where nurses must stay calm, collected and patient. Nurses may have to deal with disgruntled loved ones, patients in pain, doctors in a rush, and an administrator who has no time for them – all in the same hour!  Being calm in the center of the storm is a wonderful trait for a successful nurse given the demands they deal with daily.

Energetic

There is no such thing as a 9-5 day in the nursing world, especially in hospital environments. Nurses are often called upon to work extended hours, with shifts often spanning 10-12 hours.  Those with the energy to maintain these shifts are rewarded with longer breaks from work, but having an energetic motor as a nurse is a big advantage!

Nursing is an extremely rewarding career. It is a selfless job, and one that’s sole purpose is to enrich the lives of others. If you’re considering starting a nursing career and have the above traits in your personality, nursing and you might be a great fit!
